- Rollup-as-a-Service platform Caldera is releasing Guardian Nodes, a production-ready node system that allows network users to validate rollup blocks and earn rewards.
- HYCHAIN, the first team to leverage the system on Caldera, raised $8 million from their first node sale.
Caldera, a leading Rollup-as-a-Service (RaaS) platform, currently supports over 50 EVM rollups (Manta, Injective inEVM, Kinto, HYCHAIN, Treasure, ApeChain, etc.) with a combined locked value of approximately $1 billion.
In addition to its core roll-up infrastructure, Caldera offers a catalogue of over 50 integrations across its modular stack, as well as a range of custom user-facing tools that chains can leverage.
Guardian Nodes are a recent addition to that list.
background
Currently, the majority of L1 blockchains operate using a proof-of-stake model, where participants in the chain are incentivized through network rewards to lend their stake to validate the chain.
This incentive structure promotes decentralization by encouraging individual stakers to operate honest validators and punishing those who do not, making the cost of attacking and compromising the network extremely high.
Decentralization of rollups
EVM rollups have largely solved the scalability problem, and Ethereum's L2 and L3 allow for virtually infinite scale, but there is still no incentive for honest network participants to police these rollups.
Caldera's Guardian Nodes allow the team to decentralize the rollup by allowing users to validate blocks and secure the network in exchange for rewards. Internally, they achieve this by introducing a new “lightweight validator” to the Arbitrum rollup, allowing Guardian Node operators to validate Nitro batches on everyday hardware without having to run a full node.
Teams can launch Guardian Nodes for users through a “node sale” in which they distribute “keys” that authenticate a node’s eligibility to submit claims and earn rewards, granting purchasers the power to operate Guardian Nodes on a specific rollup.
High ChainThe first team to utilize this system raised over $8 million from over 16,000 node keys in just two weeks, fully activating the community and bringing significant revenue to the project.
Having more parties able to monitor rollups and identify malicious behavior makes the network more secure – a crucial step in establishing trust in the chain's correctness. This will drive demand for rollups' native tokens, which are required for users to participate in validation and help provide practical crypto-economic security for the network.
Guardians Nodes is another milestone in Caldera's leading infrastructure solutions, and with the successful launch of HYCHAIN, we expect to see even more teams building rollups and leveraging this innovative product in the coming months.
