Scientists optimize pistachio preservation

Shelling your favorite snack nuts just got a whole lot easier: physicists have figured out the exact size bowl to perfectly fit your discarded pistachio shells.
Ruben Zakine and Michael Benzaken Students at the École Polytechnique in Paris often discuss science while munching on pistachios in the cafeteria, so naturally, they started thinking about the math behind preserving the leftovers of their snack food.
The researchers packed 613 pistachios into a cylindrical container and measured their “packing density,” or the percentage of space taken up by all the nuts.
