Sand grains form tiny liquid bridges in the presence of water, thanks to surface tension, which helps hold them together and stick to the skin. However, official volleyball sand is specifically designed for excellent drainage to minimize water content.
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has strict specifications that the sand must meet. It should be sifted to be “not too coarse” and “not too fine to collect dust and stick to the skin,” with particles naturally weathered to have rounded corners to aid in flow and drainage.
