A strong earthquake hit Southern California on Monday afternoon, causing shaking in a wide area of Los Angeles and its surroundings.
The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 4.7, was located southeast of Highland Park in northeast Los Angeles. The U.S. Geological Survey later revised it to a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
“A significant earthquake was felt in the Los Angeles area,” the Los Angeles Police Department informed the public. “Please use 911 only for emergencies. Prepare for aftershocks.”
Members of the Los Angeles Fire Department immediately began inspecting critical infrastructure in affected areas.
“A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit Los Angeles this afternoon. Our @LAFD is currently in earthquake response mode, surveying the city for any potential damage,” shared Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
