Biologist: A scientist involved in the study of living things.
climate: Weather conditions typically existing in an area, generally or over an extended period of time.
Computer model: A program that runs on a computer and creates a model or simulation of a real-world feature, phenomenon, or event.
DNA: (short for deoxyribonucleic acid) A long, double-stranded, spiral-shaped molecule that carries genetic instructions inside most living cells. It is built on a backbone of phosphorus, oxygen, and carbon atoms. In all living organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, these instructions tell the cell which molecules to make.
Endangered: An adjective used to describe species that are in danger of extinction.
environment: The sum of everything that exists around some organism or process and the conditions that those things create. Environment can refer to the weather or ecosystem in which some animal lives, or the temperature and humidity (or the arrangement of things near the item of interest).
Evolutionary biologist: Someone who studies the adaptive processes that have led to the diversity of life on Earth. These scientists may study a variety of subjects, such as the microbiology and genetics of organisms, how species change to adapt, and the fossil record (to evaluate how different ancient species are related to each other and to their modern relatives).
Extinct: (noun: extinct) An adjective used to describe a species that no longer has any living species.
generation: A group of individuals (of any species) born at roughly the same time or considered as a single group. For example, your parents belong to one generation of a family and your grandparents to another generation. Similarly, you, and everyone on Earth within a few years of your age, are said to belong to a particular human generation. The term is sometimes extended to other animal age classes and inanimate types (such as electronic devices and automobiles).
Genetic: It has to do with chromosomes, DNA, and the genes that DNA contains. The branch of science that deals with these biological instructions is known as genetics. People who work in this field are geneticists.
genome: The complete set of genes or genetic material contained in a cell or organism. The study of this genetic inheritance stored within cells is known as genomics.
Inbreeding: (adjective: inbreeding) The mating of animals that are genetically closely related. It is the opposite of genetic diversity. Inbred animals are weaker, more susceptible to disease, and often do not reproduce well.
Insight: The ability to accurately and deeply understand a situation through thought alone, rather than finding solutions through experimentation.
Model: A simulation (usually using a computer) of real-world events developed to predict one or more possible outcomes, or a person or thing intended to reflect the output of that computer analysis.
Paleontologist: A scientist who specializes in the study of fossils, the remains of ancient organisms.
population: (in biology) A population of individuals (belonging to the same species) living in a particular area.
random: Something that occurs without intent or purpose, by chance, or without reason; or an adjective used to describe something that is chosen without particular reason or randomly.
leftovers: Something that remains from another part of something, another time, or some characteristic of an earlier species.
Sea level: The overall water level of the Earth’s oceans when all tides and other short-term changes are averaged over.
Siberia: A region of North Asia, most of which is Russian. The name comes from the Tatar language, where Sibel means sleeping land. The region is vast. It is known for its long, harsh winters, with temperatures sometimes dropping to -68 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit).
seed: A group of similar organisms that can survive and produce offspring that can reproduce.
Mammoth: A species of extinct mammal resembling a hairy elephant.
