amateur – A person who engages in an activity as a hobby rather than as a profession.
atmosphere – The outer layer of gas that surrounds Earth or another planet or moon.
Chemicals: A substance formed by the combination of two or more atoms in a certain ratio and structure. For example, water is a chemical formed by two hydrogen atoms combining with one oxygen atom. Its chemical formula is H2O. Chemical can also be used as an adjective to describe the properties of substances that result from various reactions between different compounds.
Chemical Reaction: A process that involves a rearrangement of the molecules or structure of a substance rather than a change in physical form (such as from solid to gas).
Chemical: The branch of science that deals with the composition, structure, properties, and interactions of matter. Scientists use this knowledge to study unknown substances, to reproduce useful substances in large quantities, and to design and create new, useful substances. (About compounds) Chemistry is also used as a term to refer to the recipe for a compound, how to make it, or some of its properties. People who work in this field are called chemists.
concentration: (in chemistry) The measurement of how much of one substance dissolves in another.
electric field: The region around a charged particle or object within which forces act on other charged particles or objects.
element: Something that plays a role in a particular situation or event. Contributor.
force – An external influence that changes the motion of objects, brings objects closer together, or produces motion or stress on stationary objects.
metal: Something that conducts electricity well, is shiny (reflective), and malleable (i.e. can be reshaped with heat and without excessive force or pressure).
meteor: (adjective: meteorite) A chunk of rock or metal that hits the Earth’s atmosphere from space. In space it is known as a meteoroid. When you see it in the sky it is a meteor. And when it hits the ground it is called a meteorite.
molecule: A group of electrically neutral atoms that represents the smallest amount of a chemical compound. Molecules can be made up of a single type of atom or different types of atoms. For example, oxygen in the air is made up of two oxygen atoms (O2), whereas water consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H2O).
oxygen: A gas that makes up about 21 percent of Earth’s atmosphere. All animals and many microorganisms require oxygen to fuel their growth (and metabolism).
ozone: A colorless gas made up of molecules containing three oxygen atoms. It is formed in the upper atmosphere or at the Earth’s surface. At the Earth’s surface, ozone is a pollutant that can irritate the eyes and lungs. It is also the main component of smog.
The ozone layer: A layer in Earth’s stratosphere that contains a lot of ozone (a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms) and helps block much of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, which is harmful to living things.
Persistent: An adjective describing something that lasts a long time.
Physics: The scientific study of the nature and properties of matter and energy. Classical physics describes the nature and properties of matter and energy based on explanations such as Newton’s laws of motion. Quantum physics, a later field of study, is a more precise way of describing the motion and behavior of matter. Scientists who work in these fields are called physicists.
satellite: A satellite that orbits a planet, or a vehicle or other man-made object that orbits a celestial body in space.
Star: The basic building blocks from which galaxies are made. Stars form when gravity compresses gas clouds. When a star becomes hot enough, it emits light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. The Sun is the closest star to us.
investigation: To observe, examine, measure, or evaluate something, often a broad aspect of land or a landscape.
