Minecraft, the global gaming phenomenon, is making its way into the real world for the first time through a major deal to launch themed rides, attractions, hotel rooms, and retail stores, starting in the UK and the US.
The partnership with UK-based Merlin Entertainment, Europe’s largest theme park operator and the world’s second-largest after Disney, will see more than £85 million ($110 million) invested in the first two attractions. These are set to open in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027 as new additions to existing theme parks or city centers.
Merlin and Minecraft plan to expand their strategic partnership, named “Adventures Made Real,” to other countries and regions in the future. With Minecraft being the best-selling video game of all time, this collaboration is expected to draw in millions of fans globally.
Microsoft’s games division, which acquired Mojang, the maker of Minecraft, for $2.5 billion in 2014, expressed excitement about partnering with Merlin. This collaboration combines Minecraft’s expertise in gaming and branding with Merlin’s specialization in location-based experiences.
The Minecraft franchise is expanding beyond the game itself, with plans for a highly anticipated movie featuring A-list Hollywood stars and an anime series based on the game. This partnership with Merlin marks a significant milestone for Minecraft, following its immense success as the best-selling video game worldwide.
