CRISPR gene editing while the fetus is in the womb could make it easier to treat genetic diseases, especially those that affect tissues such as the heart and muscles.
Kiran Musunur and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania have experimented with gene editing in monkeys and found that it is far more effective to give them the gene edits before birth. “What we discovered was surprising,” he says. “This opens up opportunities to treat diseases that have been very difficult to treat after birth.”
