The winning entry (pictured above) shows a cross-section of the flower of the Mexican aster cultivar ‘Cosmic Orange’ (sulfur cosmos), where the pollen grains mature in the anthers. This photo was taken by Igor Siwanowitz, a research neurobiologist at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Virginia.
