Mpox will surge in parts of East, West and Central Africa in 2024, and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a public health emergency of international concern in August. This is the first time the WHO has issued such an alert for the same infectious disease twice in a row, just over a year after announcing the previous mpox emergency was over.
