Golden oyster mushroom (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) – a fungus native to parts of Russia, China, and Japan – is one of the richest natural sources of an antioxidant called ergothioneine. Human studies have shown this compound to be associated with a reduced risk of: heart disease And an untimely death. However, because these findings rely on observational data, it is not clear whether ergothioneine promotes health benefits.
