When Hurricane Helen hit the southeastern United States in September 2024, almost 5 million houses and companies in Florida, South Carolina and Georgia entered the darkness. Some residents had no power for weeks.
Such extensive power outages are set to become more common as the world warms up. This suggests that a vast band in the United States may be vulnerable to a blackout from a hurricane.
