Asteroids ranging from 130 to 300 feet in diameter are estimated by NASA. In the unlikely event of an impact on Earth, the asteroid could “collapse at a high speed” of about 38,000 miles, according to the Center for Earth Object Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Space rocks of this size can cause local damage, but do not pose a threat to the planet or humanity as a whole.
Asteroid 2024 YR4 was initially spotted on December 27, 2024 by the Asteroid Ground Impact Tra Store Alt System Station in Chile. Since then, researchers have been using ground telescopes to study these space rocks.
NASA stated that the observatory on the ground will continue to track the asteroid until April, after which it will become too faint to be visible until around June 2028.
In March, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will observe the asteroid to get a better understanding of its size.
