A Congressional petition signed by over 200,000 people from Canada is calling for Elon Musk to be stripped of his Canadian citizenship due to his alliance with Donald Trump. The petition suggests that Musk could become the 51st state if his citizenship is revoked.
The petition, initiated by Qualia Reed of British Columbia, is sponsored by a new Democrat and critic of Musk, Charlie Angus. Canadian media first reported this over the weekend. Musk, who was born in South Africa and owns US companies such as Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter), holds Canadian citizenship through his mother from Regina. He has been supporting Trump’s efforts to reduce the size of the US federal government, which has raised concerns about Canadian sovereignty.
The petition argues that Musk’s alliance with Trump undermines Canadian sovereignty and categorizes him as a member of a foreign government aiming to erase Canadian identity. Musk has referred to Trudeau as “governor” and wrote on X, a social platform he acquired in 2022 for $44 billion.
As per Canadian media reports, petitions like Reed’s need over 500 signatures to be presented to the Canadian House of Representatives for a formal government response. Reed’s petition had already gathered around 203,000 signatures by Monday, surpassing the required threshold.
The Canadian House of Representatives is expected to resume on March 24th, with Reed’s petition set to expire on June 20th. The country has provisions to revoke citizenship in cases like fraud or misrepresentation. Those whose citizenship is revoked must wait 10 years to reapply.
Musk’s advocacy for reducing federal spending post-Trump’s defeat to Biden in 2020 has sparked controversies. Economists/YouGov polls highlight public skepticism towards Musk and his projects like DOGE, deemed less popular among the masses. Despite this, Musk remains politically active, attending conservative events and making bold statements on social media.
This article was revised on February 24, 2025. The petition, as mentioned in previous versions, will end on June 20th, not January 20th.
