Our bodies have evolved to conserve energy when food intake decreases, making weight loss a challenging battle. Scientists have identified ways to prevent the body from slowing metabolism during eating, offering new strategies for weight loss treatments like Ozempic and Wegovi.
A recent study published in Cell Metabolism found that the protein PLVAP plays a crucial role in regulating how the liver processes fat and sugar in mice, with potential implications for humans.
Professor Kim Lavansky, co-author of the study, stated, “We’ve uncovered a new mechanism for regulating fat and glucose in the liver at a cellular level.” The discovery could lead to the development of drugs that regulate metabolism without slowing it down.
By inhibiting PLVAP, mice showed improved insulin sensitivity and lower blood glucose levels, impacting metabolic rates and weight management positively. Further research is needed to understand the potential applications in humans and develop safe drugs.
Kim Ravenskyer, an associate professor at the University of Southern Denmark, focuses on liver studies in obesity and diabetes, with research published in journals like Nature and Cell.
