Ancient human cheekbones and upper jaws found in the Simadel Elephante in Spain
Maria D. Gillen/Ifes Kerkha.
The fragmentary bones from Spanish caves are the oldest human face ever seen in Western Europe. The bones are part of the cheeks and upper jaw, and are from 1.1 million to 1.4 million years old.
Bones are very different from the bones of the next oldest human beings in the same region, suggesting two different groups of ancients who lived in Western Europe a million years ago.
