Hominins have utilized fire for diverse purposes for over a million years

Mastery of fire may lead to genetic adaptations that enable early humans to withstand minor burns; however, this evolutionary trait can complicate the treatment of more serious injuries today.
An Early Stage Study suggests that early humans prioritized the selection of genes that guard against fatal infections resulting from minor burns in Homo sapiens. Yet, these very genes might hinder recovery from severe burns, possibly because individuals with such injuries were unlikely to survive in primitive conditions.
