Fast food is frequently ultra-processed

Today, two major health concerns—ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and microplastics—share a common thread. The question remains whether, and how, they impact health. Researchers are putting forth daring new theories, suggesting that these issues are connected, with UPFs containing significant amounts of microplastics that may adversely affect mental health.
“We know that ultra-processed foods contain microplastics and that these highly processed foods are associated with depression and anxiety. We figured it might be beneficial to propose that microplastics could potentially play a role in this relationship.”
