Researchers have discovered over 1,200 locations in the human genome linked to personality traits, offering a detailed insight into the biological foundations of traits like sociability, anxiety, and curiosity. This study highlights that personality is largely shaped by life experiences rather than just genes, as featured in this week’s issue of nature.

“Human personality traits fall into five categories known as the Big Five: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience,” explained Dr. Ted Schwaba of Michigan State University and colleagues.
“Studies have shown that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to personality variation over the last century.”
“Identifying genetic traits associated with personality has been challenging due to the involvement of multiple genes and the need for a large participant pool to draw meaningful conclusions.”
The research analyzed data from 46 cohorts comprising up to 1.14 million participants of European and African descent.
1,260 significant genetic variations were identified across the five traits, a significant increase from previous studies, with about two-thirds being newly discovered connections.
However, common genetic variations only explained a small fraction of personality differences, accounting for approximately 5–9% of the variance in typical trait measurement.
The study concluded that genetic signals related to personality show striking similarities across different demographics and assessment methods, with cooperativeness being the primary trait with varied genetic associations.
Genetic profiles linked to personality traits have been associated with various life outcomes, highlighting the influence of personality on physical and mental health, career paths, and lifestyle choices over time.
Mendelian randomization indicated that personality traits can causally affect outcomes like weight and smoking behavior and that life circumstances can shape personality development.
While individual genetic influences on personality are subtle and distributed among thousands of variants, they cannot predict the behavior of an individual.
The study underscores the environment’s role in shaping personality, with Dr. Schwaba stating, “Our findings emphasize the pervasive impact of personality across different aspects of life.”
“We hope this research encourages other scientists to integrate personality traits into their studies,” he added.
Dr. Michelle Lupton from QIMR Berghofer Institute for Medical Research noted, “This study sheds light on how biology and the environment collaborate to shape personality.”
“Genetic makeup accounts for up to 16% of personality variation, while the majority is influenced by our environment and experiences.”
