Newly Discovered Cat Species Found in Protected Area of Bolivia

A recent discovery has unveiled the existence of a previously unknown cat species in a protected area in Bolivia. The sole member of this species, a 10-year-old cat called “Tigrino,” has sparked excitement among scientists and conservationists alike.

Dr. Nogales Azcarunz, a Bolivian researcher, stumbled upon this unique cat during his volunteer work at a sanctuary in the region. The unfamiliar behavior of the cat piqued his curiosity, leading to further investigation.

While initially mistaken for a domestic cat by a local resident who found him in the forest, Tigrino’s distinctive traits soon set him apart. This prompted Dr. Azcarunz to collaborate with international researchers to delve into the intriguing history of tabby cats in Bolivia’s Yungas region.

Through genetic analysis of living specimens and museum samples, the team identified the newfound species as the Tirukaya cat (leopardus tyrcayo). This groundbreaking study sheds light on the hidden biodiversity of Bolivia’s jungles and emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts in protecting these elusive felines.

Eduardo Ezilik, a conservation geneticist at Brazil’s Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, highlighted the significance of this discovery: “The scarcity of records and specimens underscores the need for increased exploration and conservation measures to preserve these unique creatures.”
