Generous Gift Doubles Size of Nature Reserve in Staffordshire

Wildlife conservation groups are celebrating a significant donation left in a supporter’s will, which will expand the Jackson’s Coppice and Marsh Nature Reserve near Eccleshall, Staffordshire.

The donation has enabled the acquisition of additional land, including areas of moist forest and wetland along the meadows south of the So River. Plans are underway to create public footpaths and implement measures to regulate river flow during heavy rains, benefiting both wildlife and the local ecosystem.

Geoff Sim, a representative from the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, remarked, “This generous contribution will have a lasting positive impact on our local wildlife, demonstrating the significance of legacy gifts in conservation efforts.” The donation was made by long-time Trust supporter David Aldred.

Future plans for the floodplain land include habitat restoration initiatives such as clearing mature alder and managing willow growth to enhance biodiversity. The trust’s ownership of the floodplain also plays a crucial role in regulating river flow and reducing the risk of downstream flooding.

The expansion of the preserve will introduce new public footpaths, offering visitors the opportunity to explore diverse trails and experience the rich wildlife in the area. “By expanding our habitat restoration efforts, we will significantly benefit the wildlife that depends on these ecosystems for survival and reproduction,” added Sim.
