The Brightest Laptop Screen Ever Made: A Review
Featuring 1,344 dimming zones, this laptop screen stands out as the brightest ever produced. Through colorimeter testing, brightness levels reached an impressive 987 nits in SDR and 1,945 nits in HDR within a 9% window. The result? Exceptional HDR performance that enhances the visual experience of games and movies, despite the absence of perfect black levels seen in OLED screens. Coupled with a 120Hz refresh rate, this display is a stunning choice for gaming enthusiasts, especially those immersed in single-player games.
On the downside, the screen’s high reflectivity poses a challenge. While this is not unique to this Surface Laptop model, the level of reflection surpasses that of the MacBook. Even at maximum brightness, users may find themselves facing distracting reflections, particularly when viewing websites with dark backgrounds. Despite this drawback, the screen remains a favorite among testers.
In terms of the 1080p webcam, it falls short of expectations. Low-light performance is lackluster, resulting in noisy images. In comparison, the MacBook Pro webcam excels in image processing, effectively brightening faces without causing overexposure.
Meet Nvidia N1X: Revolutionizing Windows Laptops
Introducing Nvidia N1X, the first chip to debut in a Windows laptop. While Qualcomm led the charge with its Snapdragon X chip back in 2024, the performance of these chips failed to match up to the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models. Nvidia N1X aims to bridge this gap.
Both Snapdragon X and N1X feature a System on a Chip (SoC) design that consolidates the CPU, GPU, and memory components. This architecture, akin to Apple Silicon chips, grants the CPU and GPU direct access to local memory. This configuration is crucial for enhancing local AI processing speed, requiring optimal memory allocation for the GPU. Nvidia N1X offers two configurations: an 18-core system (5,120 GPU cores) and a 20-core system (6,144 GPU cores), similar to Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max models. The key distinctions lie in GPU performance and memory options. For instance, for improved AI performance with 128 GB of memory, the 20-core N1X is the recommended choice. Notably, the 18-core variants are limited to 24 GB or 32 GB of RAM, with the Surface Laptop Ultra being the first N1X laptop to feature 24 GB of memory.
