The Fascination of Speed: Exploring the Human Experience Behind High-Performance Electric Cars
The desire for speed is deeply ingrained in human nature, dating back to the time of the first adventurers. From the moment the first Yamnaya saw a horse in the Pontic-Caspian steppe, the idea of going faster than walking became a tantalizing prospect.
Fast forward a thousand years, and the invention of the wheel and chariot revolutionized transportation. Today, we travel in vehicles powered by engines more formidable than entire herds of animals combined, a testament to our quest for acceleration, top speed, and record lap times.
While measuring a car’s performance is typically done through objective criteria like acceleration and lap times, there’s a new frontier being explored by Polestar in collaboration with researchers at the University of Oxford. They’re delving into how a car’s performance impacts the driver’s experience, aiming to capture the intangible essence of the thrill of high-speed driving.
Christian Samson, head of product attributes at Polestar, explains this innovative approach: “As we redefine the capabilities of electric vehicles, we’re interested in exploring what goes beyond mere specifications – the human element of driving. Partnering with the University of Oxford allows us to merge engineering excellence with the emotional resonance of the driving experience.”
In a groundbreaking pilot study, 12 drivers had the opportunity to test both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the Polestar 4 at a circuit in Sweden. The Polestar 4, a striking midsize crossover and a viable competitor to the Porsche Macan, was equipped with advanced technology to measure the driver’s physiological responses. Heart rate monitors, electrode-studded skullcaps, and an eye-tracking driver monitoring system all worked in tandem to collect data on the drivers’ reactions as they navigated the circuit.
The combination of telemetry from the car, objective physiological metrics, and subjective feedback from the drivers painted a comprehensive picture of how performance translates into the human experience behind the wheel. The drivers’ experiences ranged from moments of calm to bursts of exhilaration as they pushed the boundaries of speed and agility on the track.
This pioneering research marks a new chapter in the exploration of high-performance vehicles, shedding light on the intricate interplay between man and machine in the pursuit of speed and adrenaline. As electric vehicles redefine what it means to be fast, understanding the human side of performance is key to unlocking the true potential of driving dynamics.
