Climate change could reduce sonar's detection range in certain areas, making it harder to track down submarines lurking beneath the waves.
Sonar is essential to military efforts to track rival ballistic missile submarines. In the event of a nuclear war, these ships can remain deep in the ocean for months before launching more than a dozen nuclear-tipped missiles. Submarines can also play a more traditional role, attacking conventional surface ships.
