The newly identified drought on Rapanui Island, a Pacific Island known as Easter Island, may have spurred islanders to invest less resources in building the legendary stone building. However, some archaeologists have disputed this interpretation.
Rapanui Island is at the heart of the warning narrative of disasters caused by the use of unsustainable resources. The standard story is that the first Polynesians arrived on a small island in the 1200s, in part leading to rapid deforestation.
