Ethan Cross had a special bond with his grandmother, Dora, who lived just a few blocks from her childhood home. Every day after school, he visited her, receiving kisses and delicious meals.
Despite their closeness, she rarely spoke about the traumas she faced during the Nazi takeover of Essiok, now Lithuania, before emigrating to America and settling in New York. How did she rebuild her life and become such a rock for her family? Why did she avoid discussing her past, only occasionally touching on it during events like the Holocaust Anniversary? “It left me puzzled. She seemed to bypass those conversations, yet that was understandable,” Cross reflects.
These questions lingered in Cross’s mind throughout his teenage years. As the director of the University of Michigan Emotions and Self-Management Lab, he dedicated his career to finding answers. “Emotions can be rich and beneficial, yet during our most vulnerable moments, they can also enhance our resilience,” he explains. “What triggers this phenomenon? How can we handle our emotions more adeptly? These inquiries motivated my pursuit of graduate studies.”
