Advocates and critics of major theories regarding the emergence of consciousness are increasingly embroiled in intense debates. Detractors claim that integrated information theory (IIT), which posits that consciousness can be mathematically quantified, constitutes pseudoscience susceptible to misuse in debates about abortion and artificial intelligence. Conversely, supporters argue that those who disagree are merely envious of its insights.
Researchers have long sought to understand how the brain generates conscious experiences, with two prominent theories gaining prominence: IIT and Global Neuron Workspace Theory (GNWT).
