Some white dwarfs may be frozen in time due to strange floating crystals. The crystals appear to prevent stars from cooling as they age, so white dwarfs appear relatively young for billions of years.
White dwarfs form when a sun-like star burns off all its fuel and blows off its outer layer. This leaves a hot core that cools over time and eventually freezes.
