The strange ancient creature, previously thought to be a giant fungus, may belong to the mysteriously extinct branches of the Tree of Life.
Prototaxite, Living between 420 and 375 million years ago, they were the first giant terrestrial life forms to inhabit Earth. A trunk-like structure that is up to 8 meters tall and 1 meters wide has been extended.
