Recent research suggests that the era of the Great Red Spot – a giant antifibrous vortex in the Jupiter atmosphere – has been formed about 190 years ago. Scientists use this to be based on historical measurements of storm size and movement.
The Great Red Spot was first reported by Giovanni Cassini in 1665 and was subsequently observed by many astronomers, but there have been no reports of sightings between 1713 and 1831.
Therefore, it is unlikely that Cassini’s spots will be the same as the ones we are observing today.
This article is the answer to a question (I asked via email from Helen Marriott) “How old is Jupiter’s wonderful red spot?”
