The Beni River, which rises from the highlands of Bolivia’s La Paz and meanders into the Amazon Basin, is the lifeblood of the Esse-Eja community. “We eat all kinds of fish, big and small, every day,” says Apollinar Ocampo. “We don’t have anything else to eat.” But the fish they catch poisons them.
