Despite the risks involved in events like the pole vault, javelin, and boxing, the Summer Olympics have had a surprisingly low number of fatalities. Over the past Games, there have been only three recorded athlete deaths, two in cycling and one in the marathon.
However, injuries are common. At the end of the 2008 Olympics, more than 1,000 injuries were reported. The sports with the highest number of injuries were football, taekwondo, and hockey.
