Solar eruptions can significantly reduce the lifespan of satellites in Earth’s orbit, particularly large constellations like SpaceX’s Starlink.
In the latter half of 2024, the sun will reach its peak activity, known as the solar maximum, occurring after an 11-year cycle. During these heightened periods, increased solar eruptions can trigger geomagnetic storms that heat the Earth’s atmosphere, causing it to expand and increase drag on satellites.
