Quantum computers may one day threaten encryption, but not yet

Quantum computing experts are baffled by the new export restrictions the UK government has imposed on the exotic devices, saying they make little sense. The laws apply to both existing, small quantum computers that have no practical use, and larger computers that can’t be exported because they don’t actually exist. Instead, they worry the restrictions will restrict sales and add red tape to a growing new field.
