Research on the impact of ADHD diagnosis is being conducted by Australian psychologist Luise Kazda. In a 2021 review paper, Kazda and her team analyzed 14 studies that highlighted the effect of diagnosis on individuals with ADHD. The findings revealed a sense of empowerment and legitimacy, but also noted a potential increase in stigmatization among those diagnosed. The medical model of diagnosing ADHD can lead to feelings of bias, judgment, and potentially a lifelong struggle for those affected.
The reasons behind the profound impact of an ADHD diagnosis remain unclear. The medical model conveys a different message compared to alternative models like Sonuga-Barke’s. While some parents may find comfort in a medical diagnosis, many children may feel stigmatized and burdened by the label of ADHD.
Alternative models offer a different perspective, viewing ADHD symptoms along a continuum where change is possible. By understanding the individuality of symptoms and addressing deeper psychological issues, families can make informed decisions about treatment. Although new models may lack definitive explanations, they provide hope for improvement and reflect current scientific understanding of ADHD.
While there are drawbacks to the traditional ADHD diagnosis approach, embracing new models can lead to better outcomes and a more hopeful future for children with ADHD.
