Explore the gift shop at the local Natural History Museum to find dinosaur toy containers for sale, advises Nathan Smith, director of the California Dinosaur Institute. Beware of con artists selling fake winged pterosaurs and carnivores like Dimetrodon. These imposters are not true dinosaurs, Smith explains.
Dinosaurs are a specific group of reptiles that have been around for over 200 million years. They include iconic species like Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex. While some non-bird dinosaurs ruled the planet during the Mesozoic era, modern birds are also descendants of these ancient creatures.
Evolution of Birds
Birds first appeared around 160 million years ago, evolving from small meat-eating dinosaurs like Velociraptor. Birds are technically classified as reptiles due to their evolutionary lineage.

Birds and dinosaurs share certain traits, such as feathers inherited from non-avian dinosaurs. However, birds exhibit unique characteristics like pygostyles in their hips that separate them from other reptiles.
According to Smith, “Birds are a subgroup of dinosaurs and reptiles, similar to bats.”
What’s Not a Dinosaur?
Understanding dinosaur evolution can help distinguish imposters. Pterosaurs, marine reptiles like Mosasaurus, and creatures like Dimetrodon are not true dinosaurs, says Smith.
Only land-dwelling creatures are considered true dinosaurs. Some species, like Spinosaurus, may have ventured into wetlands and beaches despite being primarily terrestrial animals.
As for Dimetrodon, it was not a reptile but a distant relative of mammalian ancestors living around 50 million years ago during the early days of dinosaurs.

Hip Characteristics and Dinosaur Diversity
Hip structures play a vital role in determining if an animal is a dinosaur and explain the wide diversity among dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs can be categorized into two major groups based on the shape of their hip bones: Saurischian (lizard hips) and Ornithischian (bird hips).
Saurischians include theropods like Tyrannosaurus Rex and sauropods like Brachiosaurus, while Ornithischians like Triceratops have pelvis bones reminiscent of bird anatomy. However, birds actually evolved from reptilian theropods, indicating a complex evolutionary history.
All dinosaurs share a common ancestor from the Triassic period, debunking the theory that different dinosaur groups evolved from separate lineages. The term “dinosaur” was coined in 1842, and since then, over 1,000 non-bird dinosaur species have been discovered, shedding light on their dominance in ecosystems for millions of years.
Modern birds are considered descendants of ancient dinosaurs, showcasing the evolutionary success of this lineage. They have adapted to various niches on every continent, continuing the legacy of their Mesozoic ancestors.
