Wood slices can serve as a water filter to remove bacteria and microplastics with more than 99% efficiency, and may provide an inexpensive way to protect people from waterborne diseases.
Previous studies have investigated more complex methods for making wooden filters with complex chemical treatments, which would be unrealistic in low-income countries where waterborne diseases cause hundreds of thousands of deaths a year, for example Antoni Sanchez Ferrer Jennifer Guerrero Para of the Institute of Technology in Munich, Germany.
