In 2019, technology journalists were among the first to learn about various companies. Karen Hao spent three days embedded in OpenAI’s office.
What she observed, she mentions Michael Sapphi, was in stark contradiction to its public image. It positions itself as a transparent nonprofit dedicated to developing artificial intelligence technologies for the greater good. “They claimed to be transparent. They claimed to be collaborative. In reality, they were quite secretive.”
Following her time at OpenAI, Hao spent the next five years witnessing its rapid evolution. On one hand, it has achieved remarkable success, now standing as one of the largest companies globally. However, she emphasizes that this comes with significant costs.
Indeed, it’s worth considering that OpenAI resembles more of an ancient empire, as she explains in her new book, Empire of Eye: A Reckless Race for Complete Domination.
