wEATER forecasts are continuously improving. With the climate becoming increasingly unpredictable, early warning systems are crucial to mitigate the economic impacts and loss of life caused by extreme weather events.
Currently, developed nations generate daily forecasts based on millions of calculations over extensive periods. Unfortunately, many parts of the world remain highly vulnerable to severe climate events, lacking the resources, manpower, or computational capacity to establish the necessary 10-day forecasting systems.
Researchers at Cambridge University believe they have found a solution by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence. Their approach claims to produce weather forecasts that outperform traditional supercomputers by being thousands of times quicker and requiring only a laptop’s power.

A recent study titled Weather in Aardvark, supported by the Alan Turing Institute, Microsoft Research, and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, suggests that such a system could become viable. It proposes a transformation of current weather forecasting methodologies. For instance, localized forecasts can be provided, such as extreme temperature alerts for African crops and wind speed predictions for European wind farms. Most importantly, this innovation offers developing nations and sparsely populated areas a dependable forecast and early warning system for potential disasters.
