A few weeks ago, Dane started switching from “paper products” like paper towels, toilet paper, and piddle pads, and his wife, to the iPhone 8 to 14.
The 73-year-old from South Carolina mentioned that this purchase, made in response to Donald Trump’s trade policy, brought back memories of the early days of the Covid pandemic when he struggled to buy masks, gloves, and toilet paper.
“It’s scary,” Dane expressed. “Prices are going up due to customs duties… that’s concerning.”
Trump’s continuous endorsement of tariffs during last year’s campaign changed after his “liberation day” on April 2 when he imposed punitive duties on imports, impacting global markets and causing concerns about economic growth.
The uncertainty caused by tariffs has affected the consumption habits of many Americans, including Dane, who worked in business before becoming a teacher and now fears the direction the US is headed under Trump.
Dane, currently on a trip to Paris, is concerned about the 10% tariff on EU imports affecting his household goods purchases.
