The Legal Defense Fund (LDF) announced on Friday its decision to withdraw from Meta’s external civil rights advisory group due to concerns about changes to Meta’s content moderation, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA).
In January, Meta made significant changes, including discontinuing the DEI program and removing a fact checker, which were perceived to align Meta with the former Trump administration. These changes led the LDF to leave the Civil Rights Advisory Group.
Following Meta’s decision, the LDF joined other civil rights groups in expressing dissatisfaction with the company’s actions.
Concerns over the impact of these changes on free expression and marginalized groups were outlined in a letter to Meta’s CEO on January 14th. These concerns continue to be important to the LDF.
The LDF also raised issues with Meta’s rollback of the DEI policy, citing potential discriminatory barriers to employment and harm to the black community.
In another letter dated April 11, the LDF emphasized that Meta’s obligations under federal civil rights laws remain the same despite policy changes.
The LDF expressed concern over the impact of Meta’s policy changes on community health and safety, urging the company to reconsider its decisions.
Meta has not responded to requests for comment.
