The social media platform Reddit has initiated legal action against an AI firm named Humanity, alleging that it is unlawfully “scraping” users’ comments to train the Chatbot Claude.
Reddit asserts that Humanity has accessed material on social networks and was “intentionally trained on the personal data of Reddit users without obtaining consent,” even though Humanity was advised against such practices.
Humanity did not respond promptly to a request for comment. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in the California Superior Court in San Francisco.
“AI companies should not be permitted to harvest information or content from individuals without clear guidelines on how that data can be utilized,” stated Reddit’s Chief Justice Officer, Ben Lee, in a press release on Wednesday.
After the newsletter promotion
Previously, Reddit had entered licensing agreements with companies like Google and OpenAI to permit the use of Reddit comments for training AI systems. The extensive text generated by Reddit’s active user base contributes to the development of numerous large-scale language models used in applications such as ChatGPT and Claude.
These agreements “have allowed us to establish meaningful protections for users, including control over content, the option to remove privacy safeguards, and the ability to prevent users from being spammed with this content,” Lee explained.
