Colleagues crying over lunch photos? A new gadget might make things worse.
Scientists have created devices that can mimic the taste of food and drinks, allowing for remote sharing in seconds. However, they have yet to conquer spicy flavors.
These gadgets, known as “e-taste,” could enhance virtual reality and augmented reality systems for more immersive experiences. They could also be useful for biomedical research and virtual food adventures, according to researchers.
The team notes that further development is necessary, especially in replicating taste and dealing with obesity that the device cannot mimic.
Now, it’s possible to share images, sounds, and even physical sensations remotely, but sharing smells and tastes remains a challenge.
US-based scientists, in a study published in the journal Science Advances, discuss the components of e-Taste devices. A sensing platform captures data on taste chemicals in a liquid, which is then transmitted wirelessly to a device that can deliver the taste to the recipient’s mouth.
The system can deliver five taste chemicals to mimic the flavors of the original item, including sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami tastes.
Tests conducted by the team showed promising results in identifying taste intensities and different flavor combinations, with an overall accuracy rate of around 70-87%, but spicy flavors still pose a challenge.
Professor Marianna Ostrist from the University of London College praised the study for its innovative integration of taste in the digital experience.
