Sophie Turner is set to portray Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider series directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
According to deadline, discussions are ongoing for the Game of Thrones actress to take on the lead role in an Amazon series based on the popular game franchise. It was reported last month that Turner was in contention for the role against Lucy Boynton from Bohemian Rhapsody.
The live-action series is a major focus for Amazon and will mark Waller-Bridge’s first project with the company since signing in 2019. The deal is said to be valued at $20 million annually.
“Given our long-term commitment to a creator like Phoebe, we are thrilled to have her on board as she is passionate about Lara Croft and has a deep connection to the character,” commented Amazon’s Jennifer Salke. As per a report by Variety last month, Salke added, “We believe that her vision as the creator and bringing this character to life will make this series a huge success for us.”
Waller-Bridge will take on the roles of writer and executive producer for the series. Besides producing and starring in the award-winning comedy Fleabag, she has appeared in Indiana Jones and served as co-writer in “No Time to Die”.
She also mentioned that she aimed to bring a “dangerous and exciting” element to the series.
The iconic role of Lara Croft has previously been portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two films and Alicia Vikander in another. Hayley Atwell lent her voice to the character in a recent Netflix animated series.
Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, has also starred in X-Men movies and crime drama The Staircase alongside Colin Firth. She recently appeared in ITV’s drama series Joan and is set to star in the upcoming heist thriller Haven.
