Makuan River, the upper part of the Thin Tsangpo River flowing through the Tibetan Plateau
Tao Images Limited/Alamy
The ancient humans were able to live in the Tibetan Plateau, the highest plateau on the planet, during the coldest time of the past 2.5 million years, showing their resilience and adaptability.
The final glacier maximum ranged from 26,500 to 19,000 years ago, marking the most severe chapters of the Late Pleistocene Ice Age. During this time, polar ice caps and ice sheets covered about 4°C to 5°C, more than the vast stripes of the Earth and global temperatures, which averaged today, were generated.
