We may be able to elucidate what happens to matter that falls into a black hole, something that was previously thought impossible. This is because some parts of the black hole's interior, called “islands,” may actually protrude measurably outside the hole. If we can do this, Stephen Hawking's long-standing black hole paradox may finally be solved.
