A scholar believes she has finally solved the mystery behind Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa more than 500 years after it was painted.
Art historians have debated the landscape and speculated about the inspiration behind the painting for years, but geologist and Italian Renaissance expert Anne Pizzorusso believes it was in northern Italy, specifically in Lecco.
Pizzorusso claims that the arched bridge in the painting is the Ponte Visconti Azzone from the 14th century in Lecco, matching the geological formations behind the Lady as limestone rocks found in the region.
According to Pizzorusso, her study of Leonardo’s work shows the collaboration between artists and scientists. Michael Daly of Artwatch UK praised Pizzorusso’s scientific understanding and believes her research has finally solved the mystery behind the Mona Lisa.
