Two widely used antibiotics may be able to regenerate heart cells in pigs, suggesting they may one day be used to treat heart failure.
Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. It usually develops after a heart attack and permanently damages and weakens the heart muscle. Treatments other than artificial hearts or heart transplants only slow progression and cannot repair damaged tissue.
