The Earth is on the brink of destruction, as scientific defense groups have announced that the famous “Doomsday Clock” has been moved forward to 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists highlighted the threats of climate change, nuclear weapons, instability in the Middle East, pandemic risks, and the integration of artificial intelligence in military operations.
Daniel Holtz, the chairman of the group’s Science and Security Board, expressed his concerns.
The group specifically raised concerns about the collaboration between countries like North Korea, Russia, and China in nuclear planning. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s comments on the potential use of nuclear weapons in a conflict with Ukraine were also concerning.
“The rhetoric is troubling,” Holtz remarked. “The possibility of some countries actually using nuclear weapons is horrifying.”
Since 1947, the defense group has used the symbolic Doomsday Clock to represent the existential threat to humanity. During the Cold War, it was set at 17 minutes to midnight. In recent years, it has been ticking closer to midnight to reflect rapid global changes.
The group believes that with cooperation from leaders and governments to address current risks, the clock could be moved back.
