Every time Craig Kirkpatrick Whitby speaks, he has to press and hold a button on a device around his neck that stops air from coming out of the hole in his throat. He explains the opening and closing mechanism before reinserting the white plastic disc. This is a heat and moisture exchanger and is implanted to help retain fluid in the lungs.
“I’ve had cancer three times in the last four-and-a-half years,” he says. His voice is currently produced by a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis implanted in his back.
